Carl Wockner Bio

Carl Wockner is the sunshine coasts most sought after dynamic and captivating professional musician.

His unique style is formed from a harmonic fusion of genres, which moulds a performance difficult to categorize but reveals Carl in a league of his own.

With a “less is more” approach to his solo performances, Carl will create a perfect balance of sound. This combined with his band is a force that remains second to none.

The band is lead by Carl on lead vocals and guitar, which are then gently caressed by a full resonance of bass, electric guitar, drums and saxophone. It’s the bands ability to take almost any song and recreate it with an original flavour and warmth sets them distantly apart from any other band.

The current outfit stems from the Carl Wockner Trio including Phil Roach on bass and Will Pascoe on drums, which was founded early 2010. In 2011 with the support of Rod Pascoe (Will Pascoe’s brother) on Lead guitar along with Dyon Tahana on Saxophone, the “Carl Wockner Band” was formed backing Carl’s current original project.

As a songwriter, Carl is heavily influenced by: –

  • John Mayer
  • Amy Winehouse
  • Jon Cleary
  • Dave Matthews
  • David Gray
  • Cat Empire
  • Damien Rice
  • Fat Freddy’s Drop
  • Ben Harper
  • John Butler
  • Any many more….

His experience has involved interviews from various radio stations newspapers and music magazines. Through many of these Carl was described as having “…one of the most amazing upcoming voices to grace the Australian music scene.”

Carl continues to perform as a solo artist and with other musicians, where he has been writing and recording his own music. Carl’s debut album is due to be available from September 2011.

Something From Carl

If your reading this then I’ve got you right where I want you! Although I’m unsure what to do with you now….

.

“Music ey… My mother is a fantastic singer and used to play the piano almost every time we were at my grandparents’ home. Most of her side of the family was very musical. My dad is more of a listener and has a record collection to almost literally sink… well at least our tinny! He has an amazing ear for music, and although he isn’t a musician, he has opened my ears to a multitude of amazing pieces, some of which are pretty left field! I never met my dads father, however when dad tells me stories of how much of a gifted musician he was, as I hold his (antique by now) piano accordion, I can’t help but smile.

.

I love my parents to the MAX!, and thank them for being tolerant of my “whistle/hum” (Carl Barron trick) that I did when I was young, and how I’d chant/ sing random lyrics and sentences that my parents would say… “Tidy your room, Da Da Diiii… Get out of your school uniform before going down to the shed… du dumm…”

.

They were also very supportive of me,  my two sisters and brother on any instruments we would like to learn. The only condition was that we must play it for a FULL YEAR! Understandably they didn’t want to purchase us an instrument only for us to turn around in a fortnight and decide we want to play something different. This really made us choose wisely. Still not quite sure why my sister chose a French horn when she was in year 5?? She thought it was the best idea ever until she realized she had to carry it to school and back twice a week.

.

I began playing Violin in year two, which lasted about a year. I guess this was the beginning of my musical existence. It wasn’t until many years later that my parents mentioned I was 2 levels above the rest of the class. Apparently my violin teacher was running out of things for me to play so started teaching me Christmas carols. Who knows why I quit. Although… I was in year two, and was probably too busy playing with mouse-traps and blu-tak.

.

Over the primary school years I also learned, piano, recorder, drums, Trumpet (very briefly) and finally guitar in year nine at high-school.

.

One thing led to another and I slowly saved and purchased progressively what I thought to be “the best” guitars, (because this one has a straight neck!) or (because this one is part electric! or WOW this one has stripes on it!!)

.

After School I went to University and qualified 3 years later with a Bachelor of Learning Management (Primary School Teacher). Throughout my time as a university student I undertook some basic retail work on Thursday nights and Saturdays. I also continued with a previous high-school band to play at parties and events, which soon dwindled to me performing as a solo artist at small café’s and bars as the other members moved away or acquired”real jobs.”

.

One thing led to another and towards the end of my Teaching degree I had fully paid for my studies through my gigging income. As it turned out I was on a better wage following my musical ambitions than if I were to follow my teaching career! Of course I decided to persue the avenue of music.

.

Through a lot of hard work and organization, I was able to establish myself as a full time musician, which allows me to merge my hobbies and passion into a business. My wife and I now live on the Sunshine Coast and plan to stay here for quite a while.

.

Thank you for making my passion the sound-track of my life.”
